Utility prompts customers to watch for scams

Oconomowoc scams image

Scammers are getting sneaky when it comes to tricking people out of their money, and Oconomowoc Utilities is hoping to spread the word to protect local residents. Watch out for the following tactics most often used by scammers:

•    Scammers may call, text, or email and threaten to shut off your power immediately. The scammer will pretend to work at the utility and request to be paid via a gift card, money wire, bitcoin, or a third-party app like Venmo. They may also tell you not to hang up the phone.

Note: Hang up and call the utility at (262) 569-2198. Oconomowoc Utilities will NEVER request that bills be paid outside of normal business hours or differently than how you already pay your bill.

•    Scammers may say you overpaid your bill, and they need to confirm personal information to process your refund.

Note: Hang up and call the utility at (262) 569-2198. Oconomowoc Utilities will NEVER request personal information over the phone to process a refund.

•    Scammers may come to your door and state they need to repair or replace equipment, and that you must pay on the spot. They may have identification that looks legitimate.

Note: Close the door and call the utility at (262) 569-2198. Oconomowoc Utilities will NEVER request customers pay for equipment on the spot and without prior communication.

Contact the utility if you have questions about a call, email or text you’ve received. It is always okay to hang up the phone and call the utility back directly to ensure the call is coming from utility staff. Call the police department’s non-emergency line if you are concerned you have fallen victim to a scam.

“With scammers getting more and more advanced, it can be harder to detect when a scam is taking place,” shared Joe Pickart, Utility Manager. “We want to keep our customers and their money safe by sharing these warning signs.”
